Thought Pyramid Art Centre

So this might be coincidental, but you know how pyramids are in Egypt, and the history of education has roots in Egypt too? Could that be what they thought of when naming this art gallery?

Thought Pyramid Art centre is a contemporary art gallery that can be found in Abuja. 18 Libreville Street, Off Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse 2 to be precise.

I was lucky enough to stumble on it while waiting for my friends as it was next to our meeting point. Sometimes, arriving before everyone else has its perks. 🙂

When I first got there, I thought the name was a big strange, but then again art is never as normal as we think it should be.

It has been described as a hidden gem in Abuja, and here are a couple of things I learnt about it, that makes it different from other art galleries around.

1. They currently have the most comprehensive collection of contemporary and modern Nigerian art.

2. Their mission includes collecting, conserving, studying and selling contemporary African art.

3. It includes an artist in residence studio. (this is a studio where artist programs can be held, this is almost like a medical residency program.)

4. They have an educational department as they are very interested in public education at all levels.

5. They have an arts library that is comprehensive and includes multimedia materials.

6. They have a large exhibition space where visual arts, theater performance & music events can be held.

7. They also have an in house restaurant called Spice Platter.

It isn’t just an art gallery, it is also devoted to helping people nurture and grow their artistic sides, be is painting, crafts, languages etc. Their creative workshop includes things like writing/reading club, ballet, language classes, cooking nights and lots more. We didn’t have things like this when I was growing up, maybe I would have painted the Mona Lisa.

Barely a year old and they’re already making great strides, so I was very happy when they told me I could look around.

Like every typical art gallery, the space is used well to pass their message across and I liked that there was someone available to explain things to me.

So everyone is welcome to the Thought Pyramid to learn, or just to appreciate the art works on display. You’re never too young or old to appreciate the arts. If you’re in Abuja, be sure to stop by. #gallery-2779-6 { margin: auto; } #gallery-2779-6 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-2779-6 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-2779-6 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
