You ever watch all these classic American movies that have involve burger chains? They have jukeboxes everywhere, people dancing and others just staring angrily at how happy everyone is. Call me a dreamer but this is what I envisioned when the classic American burger chain Johnny Rockets made its way down to Nigeria. Of course yours truly has been to its two branches; Lagos and Abuja (in Abuja I did a take out instead of dining in).
My friend and I went there hoping to get smiley faces on our plates and watch the staff break into a happy dance like we had seen on soical media. Did we get that? Nope. When I asked the waiter why there was no smiley face on my plate he said it was because I wasn’t a child. I am the child of my parents though, doesn’t this mater? Apparently not.
Johnny rockets stays true to its roots and designs the restaurant with the old fashioned American diner theme in mind. This works out well because it gives everything a clean and pristine look.
My friend and I liked that it was nice and quiet when we got there. I got the bacon & lettuce sandwich with an oreo milkshake and my friend who clearly isn’t aware that American burgers are huge got the rocket double. The struggle to finish it was real, infact I spent half of the meal laughing at her. If you go to Johnny Rockets, make sure you go there on an empty stomach. Overlooking the waiter’s mishap of telling me I couldn’t get a smiley face, he was really friendly and patient.
One thing I did notice is that Abuja and Lagos have the exact same set up; from the color of the seats to the flooring. I liked the consistency. The only difference is that Abuja has a sports bar upstairs where you can catch a game or two and feel like you’re in an American sports bar.
If you’re looking for a family friendly American themed burger joint, then Johnny Rockets is the one. As far as I know they’re the only ones that currently exist (if you know of any others, please let us know). Do I think the price is worth it? Not particularly, but I’m sure some healthy competition will come into the market and force them to re examine their prices.
