If you are in Nigeria, no matter where you are in the country we’ve all been thrown into the election frenzy. Most if not all social media platforms are also getting in on it. I especially love how all parties are trying to bring their ‘A’ game with their campaigns. First election season I’m witnessing as an ‘adult’.
I’ve been battling on if I should write a quick post about the elections. I must admit it’s all exciting and something on I saw on twitter (which I will paraphrase later) gave me the push..
Elections are 3 weeks away (although there’s talk of postponing it), and whoever wins determines how the country will be governed for the next 4 years.
I hear so many people say they’re not voting, their votes don’t count or they simply don’t care.
This is possibly the biggest issue with Nigerians, we want things to be better and are not ready to really take the steps towards doing so. The truth is, your government affects you directly or indirectly even if you don’t notice. Our ‘votes are us’ and it is always said that the winner shows that the people have spoken? Your leader is a reflection of the type/calibre of people who vote, but that’s is just my opinion. So what are you going to say?
We’re not only voting for ourselves, but for those in the villages, those who don’t know any better like we do, those people in the markets whose only concern is feeding their family and many others like that.
If your candidate is Labour, APC, PDP, ACPN, AD etc, you are eligible to vote and have your TVC/PVC, please go out and vote as long as you are sure that you are voting for the people you honestly think are right for the job (president, governor, house of reps). Besides everyone has their reason for wanting a particular person and has every right to have an opinion.
You have till the 31st of January to collect your voters card from INEC LG and ward offices
You cannot complain about who is ruling you if you don’t at least try to have a say on who should be there, if not you should sit back and watch other people’s choices take charge.
Nigeria has a long way to go in getting better, but I’m pretty sure we’ll get there, and as cliche as it sounds, you have to be the change you want to see or at least try.
Hopefully there’s no violence on that day and may the best candidate win.
*side note: Surely INEC could have chosen a day other than valentine’s day for elections and while I appreciate that Nigeria is a logistic nightmare, they had 4 years to prepare so it’s mind boggling that it is being suggested they postpone the dates because more time might be needed to distribute PVCs.
